The site I was working on during beta testing was working fine. I haven't gotten around to edit the script until recently. I try to do a sandbox checkout and it seems to go smoothly until I click 'pay' in the paypal sandbox. Paypal then confirmed my purchased and it redirects back to the website but I get a gateway error. This is the message.

I've checked my sandbox paypal account and it seems the payment as gone through. However, under admin page, there is no record of the item purchased. The admin got an email stating this.

Settings in admin, I have set the sandbox email address and check the 'test' button. I am still on 2.03 and noticed there is an update to 2.04. That shouldn't be an issue? Was there a server setting I must enable? The installer would have prompt me to fix it if there were during installation, correct?

It seems another person was having the same issue as me. I did turn on the ipn and set the correct url for it as well. But the purchase was never created and no email was sent other than the one I mentioned above.

Aside your problems with paypal.
I would advise you upgrade to 2.04 in the first instance.
David has fixed a number of bugs in this new release and it seems a pity for you to go through a lot of setting up etc, only to find that you do need the upgrade afterall.
FWIW:
I have just tested a paypal sale with 2.04 on sandbox and live and can confirm both went through fine.

By any chance for your sandbox paypal seller account, do you have the ipn set as well? On mine seller account, sometimes I cannot view the 'profile' page to set the ipn url. I get an error. At any rate, I did set the url in this format.

There could be something wrong with my sanbox account. I can follow through a full checkout with payment using a live test though. I am hoping to get this test payment fix as I like to run some more test with other features of the cart.

I had all kinds of issues with my sandbox toward the end of the beta testing, so I had to switch to live and run my transactions. I would run the tranacation and than refund my money back through paypal. It's a lot more work to do that but paypal sandbox doesn't seem to function very well at times.

I was the opposite. Paypal was acting fine during beta testing, now when I really need to confirm the test, it is not. Grrr.

Paypal is a real pain at the best of times, I can never understand why they don`t adopt the same policy as other gateways by using a secret key. Coding Maian Cart, Paypal caused me all sorts of problems. I know Paypal have other options besides the IPN setup, so some may see integration into the cart at a later date.
I`ve had many issues with the Sandbox, but live has always been ok and as long as live works, I`ve never bothered too much with Sandbox debugging. They *should* both work the same, but Sandbox works for me one minute and not the next.
Are you getting any data logged in the log files for Sandbox? Any post data?

No, in the cart. If you have gateway logging enabled, do you see anything in the 'logs' folder? Any txt file there?
And do you have anything set in sandbox which would affect the amount? Tax setups or anything like that?

I noticed if I paste that on the address bar, I get a permission denied message.
I wonder if that permission denied message got anything to do with the currency-updater.php file as well. I know we use that file to setup a cronjob for the currency update. I was and still am having trouble with the curreny update. If I put this link in the address bar, I get a permission denied as well.

Try re-downloading the 'currency-updater.php' file. That shouldn`t throw errors. The checkout files cannot be accessed in a browser as they expect certain parameters, so the error for 'checkout-paypal.php' is fine.
The post data looks fine. It could simply be a paypal problem.

I did not set any inp return url.
I simply put my sandbox email address into the cart admin.
As you can see for image below, i used both personal (sandbox) email for buying and seller (sandbox) email for selling.
I havent looked deeply into the carts paypal ipn, but it looks like the redirect is built into it.
I dont like the sandbox at all, its too complictaed. i just test with 1p (10 cents) items and do a refund once done.

Yes, the redirect url is auto parsed by the cart. The IPN url is only required I think to switch the IPN on if its not already.

Yes, the problem is that the database hasn`t been updated. The system checks for 15 seconds and if it hasn`t been updated times out. As with the live system, what happens is:
1. Paypal transmits the payment data to server.
2. The server sends the data back to Paypal to confirm that Paypal just sent it and its not some fake transaction.
3. Paypal confirms it has sent it and then the cart updates
The fact you get the log means the system receives the first transmission ok. But, if the Sandbox doesn`t do the confirmation correctly, the cart and sale will never get updated.

If live works, then the issue is most definitely with the Paypal sandbox system.

Yes, i get that problem also with using sandbox, sorry if i confused the issue here.
The page says something like "updating order status", then keeps refreshing until it times out.
Switching to live payments and askinhg some friends to buy something, (along with me doing the same)
has resulted in 100% sales, logs, stock reduction and order emails being sent out.
I have given up on sandbox for the sake of live and penny sales now.

I just open a 2checkout account and using their demo account. I have setup the account with the cart system and did a test purchased. 2checkout send me an email of an novice being made but the cart still hangs and gives me the same error as the paypal. No email was send to the admin or customer and the product was never recorded. This is two different payment system, should I investigate more on the cart system itself?
